Our MS is a two-year degree programme which requires completion of 24 credit hours of course work normally followed by a year of research culminating in a thesis that is publicly defended. The 24 credit hour course work of the programme is designed keeping in view international standards, HEC guidelines and national requirements. The thesis component carries an academic load worth 6 credit hours.

Our PhD programme requires 18 credit hours of course work. After completion of course work, the students are required to pass a comprehensive exam and successfully defend a synopsis that forms the basis of research they wish to undertake over the next three years or so. The students further are required to present two seminars: one on a general topic and one related to their research area but different from the main topic of their research. The primary idea here is for the students to demonstrate the ability to understand and explain concepts at sufficient depth.

MS and PhD course curricula and detailed course descriptions can be found here and here, respectively.

BS Physics programme was launched in the year 2014. This is an interesting and rigorous four-year programme. The course work of BS Physics is designed according to the vision of NUST (See Vision and Mission of NUST) and guidelines of the Higher Education Commission. The programme envisages uplifting of the standards of higher education in Physics in Pakistan and is in complete sync with fast growing scientific and technological changes. The courses included in this programme are a fine blend of core courses and electives. We also give an option of doing a minor in Mathematics, Nanotechnology or Electronics as a regular part of the BS Physics programme. BS Physics curriculum can be found here.

Head of Department Message

Dr. Syed Rizwan Hussain

Physics is an exciting and inspiring field of study that requires deep analytical reasoning to nurture intellectual curiosity about the world around us. The department of Physics at the NUST School of Natural Sciences aims to provide quality education to our students. We endeavor for research at the forefront of the frontiers of knowledge. The department offers three study programs namely, the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD Physics), Master of Science (MS Physics) and Bachelor of Science (BS Physics). We offer a diverse platform for undertaking research from pure to applied Physics. On one hand, we encourage our students to explore the mysteries of the fundamental structure of Universe while on the other hand, we seek to establish a footprint in the local & international industry in the fields of nanotechnology. We have a vibrant research environment in the thrust areas including Condensed Matter Physics, Nanotechnology, General Relativity, Cosmology and Astrophysics, High Energy Physics, Plasma Physics, Quantum Information & Quantum Computing and Quantum Optics. The department organizes a regular (weekly) Physics Seminar Series where researchers and scientists from industry and academia are invited to present their research achievements. In addition, research meetings, conferences, workshops, industrial visits etc. are also organize by the department. The prospective students should feel free to seek advice from head of the department or the department office for admission to any of the programs offered at the department. We hope you will find department of Physics promising with a hope that you shall contribute positively to our environment.
