Established in May 2004, School of Natural Sciences(SNS), formerly known as Centre for Advanced Mathematics and Physics (CAMP), is a young and thriving centre that contributes vitally to the research output of not only NUST but also of the country. The research carried out at SNS is regularly published in international journals of repute. SNS offers postgraduate programs leading to the degrees of Master of Science (MS) and (Doctorate of Philosophy) PhD and an exciting four-year undergraduate program leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science (BS) in the dynamic fields of Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. Our postgraduate programs emphasize breadth of understanding the core areas of Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics and Physics in addition to culminating in theses demonstrating mastery in one of the many research directions that are pursued at SNS. The thrust areas in Mathematics include Algebra, Analysis, Computational Mathematics, Differential Equations, Discrete Mathematics and Mathematical Physics while the Physics program focuses on the exciting areas of Condensed Matter Physics & Nanotechnology, Cosmology, Relativity and Astrophysics, High Energy Physics, Plasma Physics and Quantum Information & Quantum Optics.
Our BS Mathematics has the unique feature of allowing students to join streams of computational mathematics, pure and applied mathematics or mathematical economics or to remain on main stream mathematics. BS Physics allows the students to broaden their horizons by focusing on an allied area (as a minor option) or to take advanced elective physics courses. Currently the minors are offered in Electronics, Nanotechnology and Mathematics. BS Chemistry is a recently launched programme at SNS with its first intake in Fall 2018. The most significant learning objective of its curriculum will enable students analyse complex situations which will later assist them to work in the fields of socio-economic importance, R&D organizations, become excellent managers and further continue with their postgraduate studies. Keeping the current market trends into special consideration, presently courses are being offered in the areas of physical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, analytical chemistry and nanochemsitry.
The total number of papers published by the faculty/students of SNS in the last four years is about 500, of which about 375 were in ISI listed journals with an impact factor of about 663. There were also a number of papers in international, regional and national conference proceedings and chapters in books and complete books.
A regular weekly seminar series is being run in each of Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics departments. There have been a number of outside speakers and many SNS faculty members have presented talks in this series. The School has also had a number of visitors. There have also been number of conferences organized by SNS.
